Clothesline Pioneer, Anna Thorne-Holst

Filed under: HomeAnna Throne-Holst, a Southampton, NY Council member, will soon be leaving her gargantuan clothesline that she worked so hard to make legal this past June, as she downsizes to a smaller house, according to the NY Times.
Anti-clothesline legislation was already in place when Throne-Horst came on board the town council. The motivation was aesthetics, a real shame, considering that hanging your clothes out to dry is an excellent way to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint. But Thorne-Hurst fought the ban, and won.
I love this quote from Thorne-Hurst, "When we become so precious that we cannot bear to let our neighbor's laundry -- their clean laundry -- flap in the wind, it's time to take a good, hard look at ourselves."
For all about greening your laundry, from detergents and fabric softeners, to washing, drying and dry cleaning, see our Green Your Laundry feature here.
